3 Japanese Maples--Hand Bound Journal
3 beautiful Japanese maple leaves were used to eco print* the silk fabric for the cover of this hand bound journal. Inside there are 100 pages of Canson sketch paper for writing or drawing. I used a Coptic stitch for binding so that the book remains flat when open and in use. Notice the difference in how the two sides of the leaf prints. One side full of a muted mauve-purple; the other side revealing the skeleton of the leaf.
*Eco printing is a process by which leaves and other botanicals are tightly bound within a natural fiber fabric or paper and heated over simmering water. The combination of tight contact with the fabric, heat, steam and a little magic releases the pigments from the leaf onto the cloth/paper. One part science many parts magic, each print is one of a kind.
